The anime destroyed ichigos and orihimes early relationship because they cut most of the romantic canon stuff from the manga and instead included filler ichiruki moments with sad or beautiful background music and both of them looking at each other with love sick eyes. The manga makes clear ichihime will end up canon, while ichigo and rukia have a sibling/best friends relationship. Their relationship is still the center of the manga despite being platonic, exactly like kubo inteded it. People just cant get their heads around that boys and girls can be friends without any romantic feelings.
