As a soldier, food can make or break your day. You can be dog ass tired. Knowing a hot meal is at the end adds another, deeper level of endurance to use. Five days straight of MREs can also break morale.

@fredbyoutubing

I wonder if it's worth a whole video, but this show had me obsessed with Marcile's hairstyles.
Anime usually have so much same face characters that you recognize them by their hair. But she changes her hair every episode and sometimes more than once per episode.

@ManderleysBigby

since im living alone, ive started cooking for myself. i called my grandma, scribbled down some of her recipies and tried making my favorite dish of hers. sitting down to eat, that first bite was an ambush of pure nostalgia, it hit me so hard i started crying. food connects us across time and space like nothing else. ill hold her recipies close forever.

@mannybarron5610

never change pey you are an absolute gift to the anime community

@TheDalacman

I'm trained in critique and critical analysis, and can i say i really appreciate you? there are a lot of things to love about your style and your approach to critique, but your seamless use of comparative media is excellent, highlighted especially in this episode. thank you!

@ricardoraulroblesrivera7315

Dude wtf your videos are so good narrative wise

@anuarzaki

One of the rarest things I noticed about Dungeon Meshi—that most anime nowadays don’t have—is that it knows its limitations, and the story stays focused on the main plot.

If the author wanted to, they could’ve taken the story in so many different directions, like:

Expanding more on the elves
Exploring other dungeons
Diving deeper into the political aspects
Developing the magic system further

But no—they stuck with the main plot until the very end, even with all the chaos that happens later on (I’ve read the manga, so I know how it ends).

And I’ve noticed that my all-time top 5 anime all follow a similar pattern:

FMA: Brotherhood
One Piece
Frieren
Hunter x Hunter
Haikyuu

Except for Hunter x Hunter, which is so insane to me—just thinking about how Togashi built that level of storytelling blows my mind.

@gryffithan

Seeing that you were working on this new series was the push I needed to watch this show. Can't wait for the rest!

@Lil_Astronaut_106

My dad doesn't cook often, but on one day that was going wrong in all ways for me, he made soup on a whim in the afternoon, without knowing anything was wrong. I remember how I sat at the table, crying about how good and comforting the soup was. I really needed it.

In my teens, after working a 12 hour day in the heat of summer in Florida, the best thing I ever ate: A refrigerated orange.

@music4life-000

i did not expect you to bring up tip to tip, but i loved how you compared the joy food gave to Michal and Ludwig, and to the characters of dungeon meshi. it was a comparison i never saw coming but it was executed perfectly.

 btw i love every video, they are so peaceful and filled with beautiful messages. keep it up man

@Michael_Shay

The ending bit is spot on. I did a 5 day solo motorcycle journey that was mostly offroad. On the morning of day 2, I was packing up my camp, and unbeknownst to me the safety fell off my bear spray. As I was putting stuff away it went off, fortunately it didn't hit my face but it got on some of my clothes and my hands. I was close to a creek so I was able to quickly wash stuff off and I soaked my hands in the water for a while. I was pretty frustrated but ultimately i took care of it, finished packing, and carried on riding.

An hour or two later, as the sun came out, my hands started to really burn. It felt like the worst sunburn ever, and that's what I assumed it was. I had totally forgotten about the bear spray. Despite me wearing riding gloves, and having worn them many many times prior to this point, I figured maybe they weren't UV rated somehow and I'm just super sunburnt. The pain got so bad that I was pulling over at creeks and rivers to just soak my hands in the ice cold water. At one point I submerged my gloves in it so they'd be soaking wet and cold. At this point I was like 2ish hours from the closest "town", which was a tiny tiny former mining town that literally had a single bar/restaurant and that's it (less than 20 people live there).

This is a long winded way of saying that I powered through until I made it to that little restaurant/bar, and I swear I've never had chicken strips and beer that tasted so good. It was exactly what I needed in that moment. As I sat in there, the pain in my hands started going away. I had assumed since i was out of the sun, I was finally getting relief from my sun burn. However, I decided I couldn't really carry on with the pain being as bad as it was. So I rode about 4hrs home in excruciating pain. Shortly after getting home and taking a shower, I noticed the redness in my hands was gone and so was the pain. This is when I finally put two and two together. I put one of my gloves on and waited about 5 minutes and the burning returned, it was never a sunburn. There was bear spray in my gloves. So the next morning I left my house and got back to where I left off and continued the journey in a different pair of gloves. That's when I decided I'd always have an extra set of gloves on every trip.

@Petch85

lol.
I was not expecting Michael Reeves or Ludwig to come up on this channel 😂.
But warm food does tast a lot better when you are hungry, could, wet and tired.

@saxassoon

What I love about dungeon meshi is how impactful a single meal can be.

Of course the main meal i'm talking about is THAT meal, that has significant impact on the story of Senshi. An absolute masterclass in anticipation and stake building culminating around simply eating food. Love this series man

@4ltimit1

Something I appreciate about Dungeon Meshi is that we aren't starting with greenhorns.
Each member of the team is already significant level and we don't hear Anything about what level anyone is or how much HP they have or any other game mechanics. Although it appears to be inspired by DnD - it isn't. It's it's own world and is incredibly inventive while being inspired by many things but DnD isn't prevalent in Japan so they have similar alternatives. There is reason after reason for me to heap praise on it and it stands as the only anime I've given a 10/10 to so far even though it isn't what I have been searching for.

@Michael_Shay

I really enjoyed Dungeon Meshi, a few years ago I played a DnD campaign and my character was a dwarf chef who worked at a high-end restaurant that used monster parts for the food. I got so excited when I learned the premise of Dungeon Meshi

@K0nMusic

Hey pey, I know you're currently covering something else, but once you're able to, could you cover this anime that came out a bit ago called "orb: on the movements of the earth"?
It's probably one of the best anime of it's kinda and I think there's probably a lot of interesting things to notice. I'm not very well versed in the types of analysis you do, so I can't rly say all that much myself, but I think you'll probably find a lot of interesting part in it, since I did feel like the anime was different, and in a way better than a lot of other anime I've watched

@SventFulgur

I love your videos Pay, you always have a way of evoking an emotional response as you sign off, and I find myself getting a little choked up. Thank you 🥲

@KastiaVids

Another wonderful, thoughtful and insightful video from your channel! Thank you so much for all the hard work and time you put into these analysis.

@avalon1007

There's another youtuber who I've been following for a number of years now who has recently been releasing some videos on Food in Fantasy, so your deep dives into Dungeon Meshi are very apt for my youtube algorithm right now.

This is not covered as much in anime, but one of the most subtle ways you can highlight a fantasy world as noticeably different from our real world, is including a dish or meal into your setting that is wildly different from anything we normally eat. The example that comes to mind is "Steak and Eel (lamprey) Pie" from Game of Thrones. This dish comes up in basically every feast and is even highlighted as being something exciting for the characters to eat after they've been away from a city for a while. As someone who cooks a lot, I get so much enjoyment out of exploring the idea of "Foodbuilding" as a shorthand way to build immersion in a story, and it is something I am trying to do more of as I flesh out the setting for my DND games.
