@SgtGoodenough

The biggest surprise I felt watching Frieren was finishing the show and realizing I’d be perfectly happy with that being the final episode, because the journey was just so much more meaningful than any resolution.

@JeffDvrx

Dude snuck in a huge "hey, like and subscribe" in a way that makes perfect sense with the point of the video, freaking evil mastermind lol

@zoroark522

Frieren is an anime that doesn't really feel like things happen for the sake of the story to continue. Frieren feels like a more natural and realistic story, and I think they knew this and supported it with more natural shots, something that would be skipped for time reasons in other shows that are sprinting towards their next big moment while Frieren takes a deep breath of the outside air and appreciates the view.

@Gojiboi770

I came here for Frieren, but stayed for the storytelling/youtube advice

@Smithington_

Hey, I don't usually watch movies or series but your videos did push me over the edge to finally watch Frieren, so thank you!

@Gokuroro

I have recently read the Frieren manga and it's impressive how in many moments the party decides to fight monsters or whatnot, say how hard it's going to be, to only have 2 panels of the fight (normally seen at a distance) and then 3 or so of them discussing about how hard it was and how they were able to do x or y strategy. They really tend to leave the "action" in the background and focus on the slice of life parts of the story.

@Idontknowwhatthisshouldbe

I finished watching frieren today so I can finally watch these without spoilers

@twelfthknight

If something in Frieren surprises me it's how... calculated it is with all its details. Frieren isn't a plot-heavy show but it does reward you for remembering these small details with later pay-offs, like picking through the clues of a whodunnit. A simple example is Serie at the final exam, she's crouching over a bed of flowers in what seems like an innocuous bit of staging until you're suddenly reminded of the significance that flowers have in this story and to these characters in particular and the scene gets a whole new layer to it.

That's the quality of a surprise without doing a rug-pull.

@davidlong1786

Pretty sneaky showing the scene where Sein is sinking into the quicksand while talking about shock vs surprise and your expectation of Sein staying with the party and spoilers. Well played.

@KeylimeTim

I literally cannot stress enough how much more I appreciate this show! I went in blind, loved it, and then came upon your videos which just solidifies that love even further!

@Terry_Soupmuncher

The topic of this video being so closely related to tropes got me think about the way that music has a lot of overlap with story telling. Just earlier this week I my music theory teacher was talking and we ended up going to talking about Pachelbel's canon in D. He ended up showing us a rant that comedian did about it and in the video he just keeps beinging more and more songs that use the same chord progression. Your separation of shock in surprised for the sake of this video is also really good. It frees them from the usual trap that most words have where they are closely related to another word in meaning, so they're used interchangeably despite their contextual usage being different. All this to say that you made another great video that was thoroughly enjoyable. I wish you luck on your writing project, videos and music.

@huroikai

you are one of the best essay youtubers i see and easily top3 when talking about anime, keep the good work Pey, your videos are a highlight of my week.

@josetheone-t4o

Sorry wife, I cant come to bed right now. New frieren video analysis just dropped

@greenlantern7959

Frieren’s fights being intense yet brief, while showing the importance of training and prep, is wonderfully realistic for a fantasy series.

@Hange_likes_potatoes_too

I want you to know you’re one of the best, well spoken you tubers, I just wish your videos were longer:/ I want a good 2 hour video essay of Frieren or somthing. I’ve seen all your Frieren videos

@phillipmavronicholas5904

I really admire how unlike most other video essay channels on YouTube etc. pey consistency managers to peel back and reveal more and more depth from the same content rather than hammering home the face value of the content he covers. I find that monthly I am leaving a comment on his videos consistently being more and more engaged with his content compared to most on YouTube. Keep up the good work and don’t stop reeling me in with the thoughtful content you create 🔥

@annieha2613

Frieren subverting and using tropes are comparable to how a Michelin star restaurant will use science or impeccable technique to subvert very basic dishes; it’s the way they use filmmaking and storytelling techniques like foreshadowing, camera angles in such a clever way that adds so much depth to the story. Similar to how a chef uses very basic ingredients to make a popular and common dish but with really excellent knife skills, interesting plating, etc.; i.e. grilled cheese and tomato soup but the bread is exceptional and carefully kneaded and baked to perfection and the tomato soup is like solid or something! It just shows how much thought was given into the making of frieren that makes me so much more obsessed with it! I’m so glad you keep making videos that dig deeper into the world of frieren and in such an engaging and cool media format!

@dodopal66

I appreciate how you even did a bit of anime-youtuber-trope defying in the video too by explaining tropes with the example of youtube rather than anime shows. gotta say your narration really hits home and is truly engaging, nothing was overexplained and I felt like i was being talked to like an equal while still learning a LOT. to an extent yourre doing what the frieren anime did with just being real ong ong

@Waschbaermutti2

I've really been enjoying your videos. I loved Frieren, but listening on your takes of all it's different aspects deepens and explains why I loved Frieren so much. This deepened engagement with a story and it's storytelling is one of my favourite things in the world, so thank you for bringing out these videos and allowing me to love the show even more ❤

@pabloruansabino3933

Frieren is a generational masterpiece. One year talking about her and I still feel the same warm feeling of each analysis has Im watching the anime. Thank you Pey for keeping the fandom alive.
