My favorite montage from Frieren is from episode 10, where we're shown the thousand years Frieren lived between Flamme and Himmel. In the early episodes of the show, we're told that the ten years she spent with Himmel and the others was a short journey, 1/100th of her life, but such an idea is inconceivable for humans who barely live a hundred years.

In episode 10, seeing the time pass gives an idea of how long a thousand years is, but no more than the fifty-year montage we get in episode 1. Then, after meeting Himmel, we get a montage of their journey together and it's over in a second. Barely any time at all, just like Frieren said. It's hit me every time I watch the episode, and I love that the animators were able to convey such a difficult concept so effectively.

i started following you not too long ago, because of the 'discovering Frieren' series. And honestly? I am glad I did, your voice is so calming and your videos are SO well done, keep up the good work, pey!

@twelfthknight

While Frieren uses montages to capture the progression of time, it's also vital to give the work a sense of adventure. Whenever Frieren and company encounter a new location there's usually 1-2 page(s) of dialogue-free imagery which highlights what they saw and did there, most of which were reproduced pretty faithfully in the anime. It does wonders to bring you into the world, your eyes are free to go panel-by-panel seeing their notable interactions with that location for the day.

It keeps the world from feeling like it's just an interchangeable background, which it too often is especially in Japanese-made European-esque fantasy.

@benjamingoldstein9156

my favorite montage is in Your Name. The story could have easily been bogged down by the switching of bodies, but a whole film happens during the montages. We go from having them strangers to lovers within one montage.

Hey Pey,

I just wanted to recognize you for a minute. I've been following for a bit now and I gotta say that your videos for Exploring Frieren are stunning. The editing, the script writing, and the huge amount of effort you put into all of your videos is crystal clear. I can't wait for you to hit 100k subs and even beyond. You deserve it all. Keep up the great work.

@trinnistevens9150

I love Frieren's use of montage. It's gotten to the point when I get excited when I see a montage coming and I pay really close attention because they pack so much in those little moments. There is a ton of character in these quick snippets where no dialog exists. Not to mention how gorgeous and funny several of the moments are. For some reason, one of the moments I remember so clearly is in a montage where Frieren is staying with Heiter and Fern and Frieren is happily eating her dinner (a common theme in these montages) while Heiter is tossing his broccoli on her plate, looking disgusted. Like, is it important to the story that I know that this drunken monk, even in his "wise old years" doesn't like broccoli? No, but it adds so much realism to him as a character while adding some comedic relief. Yeah...I just love the montages in this anime.

@TheR8R

The intro to the movie Up is an amazing Montage. Made me cry a couple of times 😅

@cyberspacecat

Another very important part of nailing a montage is score, the montages in Look Back particularly swell with very potent and tender music that expertly convey the feelings it wants the montages to evoke.
Frieren does this a lot too, my all time favourite is probably the last journey they take in episode 1. The music and narration is peak and never fails to make me well up.

@paradise-flossed

Frieren is a show that’s a little about the action, a lot about the journey, and entirely about what stays with you “Beyond Journey’s End”

@arandomdiamond2

While many put the term "perfect" as something unattainable in an imperfect and chaotic world, an alternative meaning in some places is "fully complete" and I think that meaning definitely applies to many of those montages because they aren't missing anything nor would they be the same if something was removed.

@burridi

Ive never watched any of these animes, but the way that you breakdown and analyze them speaks to me as a filmmaker/editor so much. Also the editing of the music to your voice is also very, very good. Thank you for making such inspired content <3

@Thedweng

glad to see your channel growing dude. Been following since 4 or 5 thousand subs. love your videos 🤙

@RabidNinja000

2:20 EASILY my favorite "hey, reminder to consider subbing" message I've ever heard. You're right! Why would I sub if this was the first video of yours I've seen? But it isn't! It's probably the fifth, and I've enjoyed every single one. Thank you.

@enbuuu

I love what Frieren showing is it's all about the things we do daily that's taken for granted and yet we are unaware that they are the most substantial things we do to achieve our greater goals. That the journey is just as important as our destination. Which feels like the "least" content we can get as a topic in anime and yet we are gaining so much morals and experiencing so much feelings the smallest,simplest forms of animations from Frieren. It's such a poetic masterpiece.

@jaelyeo2482

Hi Pey, this message may not be relevant to the video but you taught me so much more about storytelling/plot making/mise-en-scene/film making than my lecturer in class 😭 I honestly just wanted to thank you for your effort that made film studies so much more interesting. I've been following exploring frieren for some time now and thanks to you, you opened a new door for me to watch films in a new perspective. Keep up the good work 👏🏻👏🏻

@wimosuka

Pey, yet again just an amazing video. The feelings I had while watching look back came back while watching this video, and the way you talk just flows like a never ending river. Keep making beautiful art my friend ✨you’re so close to 100k! I bet you’ll hit it in no time! 🎉

@zardx4230

Right now i'm in the beginning of me trying to seriously do the project's i always postponed, either because of lazyness, fear or lack of dedication,one of them is making a channel talking about my passions,and i seeing someone who's doing just that and in a way that expresses so well what i'm looking for is really motivating, keep up the good work

@Rebobinarte

Ok, Pey wth. Making me tear up at 9am was not what I expected from an informative video.
Thank you, as always, for such a beautifully done video. You're amazing, keep it up!

@KiraYamatoinX10A

I am reminded of every frame a painting showing Wolf Children: Ame and Yuki and Up as examples of long shot but If I recall correctly they classify as montage. Both are beautiful examples that are both emotionally charged.

@divisionpuff

I just want to point out that since starting to watch your videos on frieren, this channel has been a wonderful gem and I look forward to all of your anylasis; your editing and voice over is clean and creative and just wanted to congradulate on almost 100K!
