Frieren's worst episode is the last one, because we have to wait for more
Funny how my favorite episode is someone’s “worst”. Opinions are nifty and make the world an interesting place. (UPDATE: I’m glad this comment resonated with you all and led to some fun conversation. I am new to this channel, but I can tell I like the community already)
I absolutely lost it when Herson stated he was "rewarded" with a dream of his wife. As someone who worked in group homes for people with disabilities, him saying he had a dream of his wife absolutely destroyed me. It made me immediately think of the phenomenon "Terminal Lucidy" in which someone with a failing mind has brief cognitive clarity moments before they finally pass on. I don't see this as a reward, I see this as a sign that his story is truly finished and it hits so unbelievably hard.
Him talking about how we don't get enough about Himmel past his adventure with Frieren is him missing the entire point. Its her greatest regret that starts her on this journey. They didn't show the adventurer's meeting up because Frieren squandered her time left with him and didn't visit once until the comet came back around. Add in all of the people at his funeral and all the people who still remember him fondly throughout the show, and several people who say he'd come back to their villages over the years and you get the feeling he was a man who liked to travel still, but was fine enjoying what was a very well earned retirement as a famed adventurer.
It feels very strange to claim a series is advocating a passive approach to relationships when the most emotionally intense scene is the main character weeping with regret that she did that exact thing.
I appreciate when people are able to calmly argue
Frieren, the main and titular character, in ep 1: "why didn't I get to know him better?" This person: "Why doesn't the anime show more of Himmel's life?" Hmmm...a real thinker...
Herson either made a bad faith attack video, or he got absolutely trolled by some bad subtitles and made an entire video about it.
I appreciate how you took a combative stance without being condescending or aggressive, which seems so hard to do these days. Love the vid :)
I am absolutely gobsmacked that he so comfortably looked at the man who KILLED THE DEMON KING and asked "What did he do with the rest of his life?" If anybody had ever earned the right to not do shit for 50 years... lol
One thing I think Herson misunderstand and or doesnt really appreciate is the value of using contrast as a tool for storytelling. Frieren is a show where the main arc of the protagonist is that she learns to value connections, even if those she connects with doesnt live nearly as long as she does. So she activly seeks out these connections the 2nd time around. Voll is a contrast to this because he did what Frieren didnt and formed a connection with soemone he loved even when he knew he would outlive her. Frieren and Voll work as foils for each other in this specific aspect of the shows main theme.
brother is ending drama slop reactionary video essay by being reasonably aggressive like a proper adult. gigaPey - it's what Himmel would do I guess. nice vid
Frieren really changed me. I started to value my relationships much more seriously. I try to spend more time with people now, because this show reminded me that I can’t take anyone for granted. That’s why I honestly don’t understand how someone could interpret it in the complete opposite way. It’s not promoting apathy or being just an observer — it’s the opposite. This show made me take action, not just watch life go by. I want to be the force that moves things forward. I’m fully with you. Also, I really appreciate how calm and respectful this video is — great video as always.
Rewriting the subtitles and using them to paint your argument is a very interesting critical technique. I like this new outreach of inventing things to be mad about, it shows real inventiveness and dedication to the hater ideology. Herson should be commended for his work.
Boiling down Graf Granat and Lord Orden to grieving fathers is such a huge, myopic disservice. They are, but the story is driven by their responsibilities that pull them away from that. Graf Granat has to contemplate peace with demons instead of taking revenge because his people deserve peace. Lord Orden has to think of his city instead of mourning his son.
Yeaaah. I'll definitely take his final take about relationships with a whole salt mine. Coming straight from the man's own Discord: "I understand that the core theme of the show is that friendships and relationships need to be cherished because of their fleeting, irreplaceable nature. I just wholeheartedly disagree with it. I think relationships are replaceable."
A 30 minute vid is crazy work(this is heaven)
I don't wanna' make judgements about someone I don't know, but coming away from Frieren with "loneliness is inescapable" as the main theme makes me hope this guy's okay 😢
I must say that I never got the impression that Voll isolated himself; it always felt to me that he’d simply been there so long that he was viewed by most of the locals more as part of the scenery than a person. I’ve known many people like that in real life.
