So essentially, the characters whose names contained maru, all became orphaned at an early age, were probably the only surviving sibling, and therefore never got their "real name." Genuinely love how context can give something as simple as a name the ability to add depth and backstory to a character.

It actually was the same way in Russia! My surname literally means Imp’s (daughter) because one of my ancestors was named Imp to make evil spirits think he’s one of theirs, which was very common among surfs. So cool to see very different cultures have similarities.
