ALSO, funny how Stark is good with kids, but almost always had problems with the elders, while fern is a total opposite.
Really stupid miscommunication is my all time pet peeve in any story, so when a story does genuine miscommunication that feels real and is talked through it's so refreshing!
"It wasn't just that Stark held Fern's shoulder down. She remarked that his grip was strong, and that it hurt her because he wasn't controlling his strength. It's easy to marvel at someone's physical prowess, but only when it's used against you does it suddenly become terrifying." I made that comment on that video referencing the scene where Stark holds down Fern's shoulder. It was a wonderfully done scene that a lot of men can relate to, because we aren't always aware of losing control in the moment. I've been told countless times by my female family and friends that I'm too strong, that it's scary when I let my focus slip for even a second. Sometimes it really does feel like I'm living in a world of cardboard and I can't blame them for feeling that way towards me. It's a constant struggle that I have never seen depicted in media before, let alone depicted in a way that feels so real.
"Natural" I think is the key word here. Romance in anime/manga can be so stereotypical that it kind of hurts, especially in this genre which is so full of wish-fulfilment you get romantic partner(s) as a kind of extra reward, like loot. Seeing Stark and Fern come together in moments placed here or there across the story is also seeing them grow and mature as people. Which is quite heart-warming when you have such likeable and well-drawn characters, you want them to achieve what Himmel and Frieren sadly never could.
The way characters adjust their clothing is just incredible if you know anything about animation. Just look at how Fern pulls on her robe before sitting down! The little details man!
The cabin scene is also very good at showing everyone else's character too- Frieren is a naturally 'wait and see' kind of person, Sein is more the kind to confront the issue head on, aware that letting it fester will not do well for everyone. It is also the first time we see Sein as an actual priest- mediating people is part of his job, and he does it perfectly here.
I've watched Frieren about 4 times now, and every time I catch tiny "insignificant" details in the animation or sequences that blow me away. This last time, this sequence really caught my eye. Specifically, there is a scene when they are practicing dancing where Fern falls, and it cuts to Stark watching that happen. Then when the dance scene actually starts, Fern starts off clearly nervous. Then she suddenly realizes that Stark is making it easy, that he's leading, that she can relax because he won't let her fall, and you get the sense that Stark is fully aware of this, that he saw her struggle, knew she wasn't super confident in her dancing, and made sure to lead in a way she could easily follow. It's an incredible moment packed with so much genuine care and the fact that that kind of moment happens at least twice an episode for like 18 episodes straight is unbelievable. Without contest my favorite anime at this point, I've just never seen anything so pure and powerful.
My favorite small detail in the dance scene is that when Fern takes Stark's hand to stand up and dance with him, her other hand goes out flat, like when she does her happy walk.
the more i watch this series, the i wonder "did i even watch the show?". there's so many moments that i seemingly missed, so many things that my subconscious knew that what i was watching was great but at the same time i never realised. watching this series you're making, makes me feel more like frieren, where i'm recontextualising the show and all these moments in a new more meaningful way. while simultaneously feeling like i missed out on such amazing but fleeting moments. because not only is Frieren the only show that made me care about the past characters that we never really saw and their journey so much that i miss them, it also keeps moving forward. the show keeps progressing whether you are ready to or not. it's a steady pace, but never ending. and the fact the shows pacing matches how frieren probably feels on a day to day basis, adds so much more that you can miss these moments, and then they're gone.
This is two things missing from most modern movies and shows: It's subtlety and trust that the audience isn't stupid. EDIT: A third part of this is the fact that Fern and Stark have a misunderstanding... but their friends help them figure out what's wrong and they talk it out. It's not played for "Dramorz" (the tendency for shows and movies to do THE most dramatic thing possible regardless of whether it makes sense), it's played as a misunderstanding among friends that is worked through by communication and trust.
One of my favorite elements of romance in anime are what I call the B-romance plots that happen with side characters the slowly build in the background to the point you can easily overlook it. Frieren took that idea and used it with the shows main characters and perfectly executed in a way no other show has ever come close.
this channel serves as lessons for my storywriting.
As sien said "just get married already, damit"
WE BACK TO FRIEREN LETS GOOOO
The dance was a beautiful example of showing not telling. Beautiful animation, beautiful storytelling.
been waiting for a frieren video. btw guys, am i cooked? I love frieren so much that since the release of the anime, i've been constantly watching frieren content every single day lmao.
I don't usually leave comments, but I wanted to thank you for these frieren analysis videos. Analysing the subtelty of these interactions and emotions has helped me even understand my own feelings. Thank you for the outstanding work!
This is the series that got me to go and watch Frieren. I first saw clips and then I heard the way you talked about it. That's when I said to myself, "I have to just go and watch this show." Best decision ive made. I cant get enough of this show. Whether that be from talking about it with others or if it's finding new video essays about it, or just coming back to this channel every week or two to see if there is a new "Exploring Frieren" video. I seriously hope you don't run out of things to talk about with this show anytime soon, cause I am in love with this series.
Your vocabulary paired with the overall structure of these videos is such a pleasing mix. I could listen to these forever
