The Great Unconformity is an area of geologic interest where 1.2 Billion years of geologic history are missing- between the Precambrian Vishnu Schist, Gneiss, and Granite (1.75 Billion years old) and the Cambrian Tapeats Sandstone (540 million years old). This is an area of Grand Canyon strata, which has been tilted and moved 120 kilometers west through Basin & Range Faulting. Extensive Garnet is found in the Vishnu Group.
Garnet is a group of minerals known as Nesosilicates, which have chemical formulas of X3Y2Si3O12. The most prevalent Garnets in this locality are Pyrope (the Magnesium Member, Mg3Al2Si3O12) and Almandine (the Iron Member, Mg3Al2Si3O12). Garnet is a type of gemstone that has been revered for millennia.
As always, please respect the land and enjoy!!!
