Hackers working for the Sinaloa drug cartel, formerly led by Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, broke into an FBI official's phone and used the data to murder informants, the Justice Department announced.
The cartel also used surveillance cameras in Mexico City to track the official and their contacts. This information was then used to threaten, and in some cases kill, sources and cooperating witnesses.
A DOJ report highlighted the increasing threat posed by advanced software in the hands of criminal organizations like cartels.
Katarina Szulc, an independent journalist based in Mexico, has been reporting on drug cartels for years.
