In Japanese, honorifics and casual expressions are used differently depending on the person you are speaking to.

■Casual →friends and family

For example, if you are speaking to a business person, a neighbor, someone at a store, an older person, or someone you are speaking to for the first time, you generally use honorifics. (However, even in these cases, there are rare instances when casual language is used if you are speaking to someone close or in a friendly manner.)

In this video, one sentence is presented in honorific and casual language to help you learn the difference. All sentences are carefully selected basic phrases that I myself, a native Japanese speaker, often use in my daily life. A native Japanese narrator speaks Japanese, so you can listen and pronounce the phrases as you hear them, and practice over and over again.
