On January 25, 2012, two dozen operators from the notorious DEVGRU (Seal Team Six) floated through the pitch-black Somali night on their paragliders. Their destination was a pirate hideout in the center of the country where two hostages were being held. All attempts to free them through diplomatic channels had failed, and the elite soldiers were now to resolve the matter in their own way.

The two hostages, Jessica Buchanan from the U.S. and Poul Hagen Thisted from Denmark, had taken part in a mine-clearing operation in Somalia in October 2011 and had been easy prey for the pirates, who were hoping for a large ransom. However, neither numerous talks with local tribal elders nor the provision of $1.5 million could convince the hijackers to release them. After Jessica's health rapidly deteriorated and special forces were able to determine the location of the hostages, President Obama gave the green light for a rescue operation.

Just a short time later, 24 Navy SEALs then jumped out of a C-130 Hercules and entered the space north of Mogadishu by gliding parachute. The method of transport was chosen so that the hostage-takers would not be alerted by approaching helicopters or vehicles and execute the hostages in the worst-case scenario. After landing in a remote area, the squads had to sneak up on the pirates' camp on foot for several miles. Jessica remembers hearing a strange noise coming from the bushes, which her captors noticed shortly after. They were still shouting warnings to each other, but by then it was too late. Out of nowhere, the elite soldiers poured out of the darkness and turned the camp into hell on earth for the enemies. After a short but fierce firefight, all 9 pirates were fought, the hostages well.

Some Black Hawks landed nearby and after the loadmasters calculated that they could take off again even with the heavy balls of the operators, the hostages disappeared with their rescuers into the same Somali night from which they had come.
