We rescued a dog

On the early hours of Saturday March 23, 2019, there was a robbery right across the street from my house. Some dude went into my grandpa's backyard and took some stuff. My grandparents noticed and my uncle decided to check out what had been stolen. Upon investigating, he noticed a few things had been tossed over the wall leading to the exit ramp of the freeway near our neighborhood. He went over said wall and while he was searching for his belongings, he heard a noise of some sorts. He followed the noise which eventually led him to a drainage system. Behind the huge metal crate that covered the system was a poor helpless dog. She was stuck and in need of rescuing.

My uncle quickly told our animal-friendly neighbor about the dog and she called the Humane Society so that they could come and help. We also called 911 to see if some firefighter could help rescue the dog. Instead, dispatch sent highway troops to our location but they couldn't find us. My family, a few family friends and I decided we couldn't wait for anyone so we worked together to help the dog. We knew that no one would be coming anytime soon so we did what we could. We were all worried that the dog would have a misstep and take an alleged 30 foot plunge in the inner part of the drain.

My mom had the brilliant idea to unscrew the bolts keeping the crate in place so that someone could get down there and help the dog. After a few moments of tedious and nerve-wrecking work, they managed to get the crate open enough for my uncle to get in the drainage system. He carefully used a ladder to climb his way down to get the dog and carry her back up and out to safety. The rescue mission had been a success! No one was injured but most importantly, the dog was safe and sound.

We placed everything back the way it was and after some time, the Humane Society arrived to collect the dog. They said her it was likely that the dog had been hit by a car while she was on the freeway and she sought refuge behind the crate. No one really knows exactly how she got in there though. Either way, she made it and we were told that the dog's leg would be looked at and after she recovered, she would be sent to a foster home. It was a happy ending after all!

I just want to point out that what we did was dangerous but we were careful the entire time. We had a lot of safety measures put in place and we made sure nothing was rushed. What we did on this day was not a test of our humanity but rather an expression of our human decency. I can only hope that others would do the same for any other creature in need of rescuing.
