てきとう (適当) is often introduced as "appropriate" or "suitable". However, that's not how this word is commonly used in everyday language. When you look up this word in a dictionary, you'll find a list of definitions, some of which seem to contradict each other: appropriate, sloppy, proper, irresponsible... This word can be very confusing for many Japanese learners. In this video, I will explain the other, more common use of the word てきとう.
